A few tips for dealing with criticism constructively

A couple of tips for managing analysis usefully A couple of tips for managing analysis productively We've all been there. You're situated opposite your chief, prime supporter, or coach. Your stomach fixes as they mention to you shouldn't something be said about your work needs improvement, and why.Sometimes, it feels like you're being assaulted, or that they see you as inadequate. For a considerable lot of us, our first drive is to fold humiliated, leave the room, and effectively stay away from these sorts of circumstances in the future. But this is a mistake.Receiving contrary input can be frightening, no uncertainty, yet the manner in which individuals react to basic circumstances is frequently what isolates the champs from the losers. For the majority of us, we will in general have two kinds of responses to negative feedback:Too Stubborn. You become protective and safe, and thus experience issues disguising the input to improve. This demoralizes fair input later on, which can prompt stagnation.Too Open. You are so transparently open to such a criticism you hear, that you take a sta b at executing every last bit of it indiscriminately. This confounds your capacity to gauge or organize what criticism merits taking, and what isn't. In any case, neither of these methods for reacting to negative criticism attempts for your potential benefit. So as to turn into the most ideal rendition of yourself, you should have the option to tune in to analysis with a level head, and distil which bits of it are generally significant (and which are presumably not). There's no space for an excessive amount of stiff necked attitude or too little backbone. For startup organizers, you just truly need to locate the sweet spot between the two boundaries. You simply need to do it.Founders, particularly, get huge amounts of counsel - both basic and something else. In case you're unwelcoming to it, you'll stick excessively long to bombed thoughts and negative behavior patterns. In case you're excessively open to it, and have a go at actualizing each bit of analysis you get, you'll wind up seeming well and good or aren't really valuable. It's a significant and unpretentious aptitude - a sort of exercise in careful control of mindfulness, tr ustworthiness, and refining - that all organizers and individuals, when all is said in done, have to master. Here's how:1. Gauge analysis dependent on its acceptability indexNot all criticism is made equivalent. One approach to distil the unhelpful criticism from the valuable is to consider who is giving it, how experienced they are on the planet you're endeavoring to effect, and how authentic they are.For model, a specialist who thinks nothing about account would not score high on your trustworthiness file in case you're in the market for guidance on stocks. (This is something Ray Dalio talks about in Principles.)It's likewise essential to think about what as an individual's basic inspirations may be for giving you criticism. Those with more skin in the game will have an innately higher trustworthiness score since you realize they're put resources into your success.2. Figure out how to organize just what's actionableThere are sure changes or acclimations to your item or business tha t you just won't have the option to make. The initial phase in figuring out which bits of input to disguise and actualize is recognizing what is and isn't actionable.Maybe your item is based on head of something different (for instance, a Facebook Instant game based on head of Messenger). On the off chance that you get input relating to the hard limitations of that more fundamental segment, it's reasonable you won't have the assets to address it, as it would involve foundational changes. Most of the time, that is alright. Realize you can't fix each issue, at any rate not all at once. After getting input, hold prioritization gatherings with your group to decide what number of assets every change may require. Get rid of what's significant and so forth, and organize what changes are generally effective to make right now.3. Try not to play it excessively protected; it's alright to settle on wrong choices as long as you gain from themWhen you're building or turning out something new, recol lect that a serious mix-up numerous individuals make is permitting the remote chance of accepting basic criticism to shield them from taking inventive risks. That brings down the expected significance of whatever you're working, as enormity is inseparably attached to risk.Taking dangers - and settling on inaccurate choices therefore - is alright and reasonable, as long as you gain from those missteps and use them to improve your item in its next iteration. It's significant that when facing challenges you make sense of an approach to flop quick or accelerate the emphasis/input cycle. While testing, the quantity of shots on objective matters. In reality, this procedure of taking risks and fixing what doesn't decisively work is an important segment of building an incredible organization. It's a matter of moving toward the work scientifically.Throughout everything, understand that nothing you do will ever make everybody happy.Avatar, for instance, is the top-netting film ever - yet it flau nts just a 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.5/10 client score on MetaCritic.Game of War, which for quite a while was the #1 top-earning iOS round ever, has more than 20,000 one-star audits on the App Store (that is very nearly 1 out of 5 of its reviews). This is a significant point to recall. Particularly when your items are progressively inventive, some measure of basic input is inescapable - regardless of how effective your items end up being. It's difficult to satisfy everybody. In the event that you attempt, you'll amuse nobody, and end up with something that is dull and average. At the day's end, you need to perceive that getting basic criticism is basically a piece of building an organization, and all the more for the most part, of doing troublesome work. Those who wind up prevailing in their industry don't do so in light of the fact that they by one way or another maintained a strategic distance from regularly committing errors or delivering ventures that had imperfections, nor di d they manufacture something that everybody cherished off the bat. Or maybe, the individuals who succeed have a capacity to isolate valuable, significant input from the clamor that doesn't decisively matter. This article was initially distributed on Quora.

Writing the Perfect Resume For 2020

Writing the Perfect Resume For 2020Writing the perfect resume is as important today as it was when people first started writing them. As technology advances, you will find that the types of resumes you write are going to change, as well. What used to be one resume format or another has now become a changeable formula with one format being used in several places. So while you might have a list of professional contacts, keep in mind the changes in who those people are and how to apply your knowledge. The reason for this is that hiring managers will often take a look at all your past work experience, as well as your job goals. They want to see that you understand how to succeed at your job, that you have all the training you need to be successful, and that you are organized enough to do your job. They also want to see that you know how to carry yourself professionally in the face of rejection. This all means you have to have a well thought out resume, which includes skills, abilities, an d responsibilities that fit your prospective employer's needs. The best way to start on creating an ideal resume for today is to understand the purpose for writing the perfect resume. The intent behind your resume is to convey what your value is to the person reading it. They are looking for specific types of information that will help them determine if you are a good fit for their job. In other words, the resume is not there to make a new hire; rather, it is an assessment of someone's current needs. If you remember the old days, writing the perfect resume required a lot of research and background on past employers. You had to get the details from references, and maybe even negotiate a fee for using their work history to do your research. The most important fact in the writing process is that you need to gather all the facts, and don't try to create an outline. With computer applications such as Applicant Tracking Systems, this is no longer necessary. What happens is that you just sit down at your computer and start filling out a simple application form with all the information that is relevant to your job, with few exceptions. There is usually very little time involved in the whole process and you can do it from the comfort of your own home. Most importantly, don't try to fill out the application by filling out all the basic information. It takes just seconds to search the web for information on the main points of your application. You should know that you should only put in your biggest benefits and the best parts of your personality.Looking at the information that you have been given, the next step is to come up with a more concise version of the resume. You may want to use some of the templates available for free on the internet, which can speed up the process. Using the templates, you can have one that includes all the information you need to convey the message you want your prospective employer to take away from your resume. When looking at writing the perfec t resume, keep in mind that you will change over time. Keep in mind that you might be more comfortable with a specific format, and it can help you speed up the process of completing your resume. If you plan on writing for many years, you may want to consider hiring a professional to do this for you.

Ep 212 - Job Seeker Application Scams - Workology

Ep 212 - Job Seeker Application Scams - Workology One of the most insidious problems job seekers have to deal with is application scams. It seems like there are as many scams out there as there are real jobs, and it can be really difficult to tell the difference. These scammers have different purposes, depending on the scam to collect your information to use for identity theft, to get you to cash fraudulent checks or to wire or send money, and to get you to pay for services that don’t exist. And they’re everywhere on Craigslist, legitimate job boards, on Facebook, and Twitter. The question is: How do job seekers know if a job is legit?   Episode 212: Job Seeker Application Scams and What to Look For with Fareedah Shaheed   (@cyberfareedah) Robert Raiford According to a 2019 report, phishing attempts have grown 65% in the last year. They are costing businesses and individuals billions of dollars. I wanted to talk to not only a security expert but talk to the job seekers that are being impacted by these scams. These really came to my attention after seeing the countless job seekers from a job seeker Facebook community I’m a member of that has 40,000 members.   I reached out to one of those group members who has encountered a number of scams but the one that hit home for him was from a recruiter who found him through LinkedIn. His name is Robert Raiford, and he’s one of our podcast guests today. Later in the show, I’ll be joined by security expert Fareedah Shaheed, so stick around through the end. How Scammers Are Reaching Out to Job Seekers There are a variety of ways that scammers are engaging and doing outreach to job seekers. Sometimes its a fake job posting or in Roberts case a recruiter reached out to him via email after finding his profile on LinkedIn. Robert has some great insights into how crafty these scammers are getting and the lengths as a job seeker he has had to go to as part of his own research on the recruiter. I wanted to have Robert share his point of view because Im finding in my own conversations with recruiting and HR leaders that many dont know how frequently these scams are happening to their candidate pool. Its only later when HR is contacted by a candidate who is upset because no one contacted him/her and disappeared after the candidate provided their credit card information to purchase (and later be reimbursed) for office supplies and equipment. Robert is in the job market for a contract or a full-time job, and as a contractor he is in the market for new projects on a regular basis more so than most job seekers. Because of this, he this he has encountered a large number of job search scammers. How Employers Can Protect Themselves and Their Employment Brand In the second part of our podcast interview, Fareedah shares how employers can protect themselves against scams, misrepresentation, and the impact on their business and employment brand. So many of these scammers are falsely misrepresenting an employer which could lead to a whole host of issues including negative press and publicity, as well as poor reviews on employer review sites like Indeed and Glassdoor. Fareedah recommends that employers are open and transparent about their hiring process and provide job seekers with a way to easily contact them and engage to ask questions or follow up on the status of their job application. Doing so will alert employers to any scammers misrepresenting their brand, but also provide an easy and accessible way for job seekers to connect with someone from the organization to quickly answer any questions or concerns. She also recommends for job seekers to not share personal information including your social security number and to be cautious when being asked to interview over text or Google chat instead of video interviewing or a traditional face to face or phone interview conversation. Conclusion I want to thank Robert Raiford for sharing his story with us today, as well as security expert Fareedah Shaheed for her tips on how to avoid job seeker application scams. The Secret to Landing the Job of Your Dreams

The Secret to Landing the Job of Your Dreams Question: I am so burnt out and literally loathe my job. I have been dreaming about changing industries for over 2 years and I know I will just keep getting more of the same the longer I procrastinate, but I just cant seem to take that step forward. I highly doubt I can get what I want in this economy and I dont have a clue how to go about getting hired in an industry I am not qualified in. Can you help? George C., Minnesota Answer: George, I have helped so many people over the years that shared that same story! It is frustrating to be in a rut, but I commend you for thinking about the future you have taken the first step. Most often, people who are happy and satisfied in their careers are ones who have done some soul searching, figured out what they really wanted, and then did what it took to get them there. Mary Elizabeth Bradford How to Begin Creating Your Plan When first creating your career plan, allow yourself to brainstorm. You must begin to get whats in your head out on paper, so you can start to come to terms with whats important to you, what you need to get rid of, and what might be holding you back. I should mention that money is often the jailer that holds my clients hostage so many times. I cant change careers or positions because I really need the money I am making now. If this is your position as well, I would challenge you to first come up with a plan and a timeline for changing that situation. Even if the goals you map out are a couple of years away, the power of writing down your goals and working toward them either solo or as a family is profound. Sometimes we think we will have to take a pay cut, but guess what? A focused plan for a career transition and a powerfully written functional resume can do AMAZING things for you in the money department. The better you look on paper and the better you interview, the more your potential companies will want you. Often I help clients change industries and they take NO salary cuts AT ALL! They are always amazed. Tips for Brainstorming Write out all of the things you dislike about your current and past positions. This is usually an easy one to start with, as most people are really clear on what they dont like! Now, throw that piece of paper away. Its gone. Time to let those things go and focus on what you do want. If this sounds too woo woo for you, just wait you will be surprised how this process helps you to move forward! Establish Your Career Parameters Write down your driving motivators. These are the two or three things that MUST happen in your next move they are essentially fixed, such as geography, industry or financial needs. Be honest with yourself. Next, brainstorm on your secondary career parameters. These are things you would like to have, but its not a deal breaker if you dont get them. Finally, its time to define your dream job. Picture a blank canvas that you can draw any picture that you like on. Crystallize your vision of your dream job by closing your eyes and thinking about what your dream job means to you. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself: What does it look like? Where are you working? At home, looking out the window at your garden, or looking out at the skyline from your downtown office on the 9th floor? Is the environment cutting edge and fast paced? Highly technical? Is it refined, traditional or academic? What kind of people are you working with? What are you doing? Are you working independently or with a team? And so on. Treat this as a creative and fun experience. Its a good idea to send your thought gremlins that tell you all the reasons why you cant do this on a coffee break so you can have a clear head and an open heart as you begin. Action Now identify three things you can do right now to get you moving in the right direction. Do you need to hire a resume writer to help you? Do you need to join an association that will open up a window to the people you need to know in your industry of choice? Do you need to join some groups on LinkedIn that are in your new industry of interest (you can hide your groups if you dont want your current employer to get suspicious)? Break your goal down into manageable steps. One step builds upon another and small steps lead to change and growth more quickly than we often anticipate! On the opposite side of the coin, this implies organizations can have hundreds or even a large number of candidates. The time and cash expected to sort and assess each competitor would be tremendous. In 2013 alone, U.S. partnerships burned through $72 billion on enlisting administrations, staff, and items, as indicated by Forbes. Numerous organizations re-appropriate the enlistment procedure to staffing firms, which offer types of assistance and programming, for example, candidate following frameworks (ATS). Despite the fact that candidate following frameworks can spare an organization time and cash, they dont have the judgment of a human. Now and again, even the most qualified competitors get disregarded in light of the fact that they dont recognize what an ATS is searching forâ€"or that an ATS exists by any means. 2. Occupation searchers ought to consider how they may secure their fantasy positions. Is it accurate to say that they are taking a gander at the correct ability systems? Focusing on a corporate position, yet deficient with regards to a LinkedIn profile? Occupation searchers dont consistently recall that selection representatives are looking wherever to locate the correct fit. On the off chance that youre work chasing, make it simple for selection representatives to discover you. Having a noticeable social impression, or generally speaking on the web profile, builds your odds of being found. Simply ensure that everything related with your online nearness paints a positive picture. 3. Candidate following frameworks (ATS) This is in all probability where your resume is sped off to after you hit submit on an online request for employment. An ATS is the program that helps channel and record each submitted continue. Most candidate following frameworks use resume parsers to identify and remove important data from each resume. I was reading How To Go From $0 To $1,000,000 In Two Years on TechCrunch and wanted to share this with those interested in job search, career management and personal branding: Rule No. 5: Blogging is not about money.  Blogging is about trust. You don’t sell ads on your blog (rarely), you don’t get the big book deal (rarely), but you do build trust and this leads to opportunities. In Bryan’s case it led to more inflow, rather than him going door to door, and it also led to his biggest early opportunity. My own blog has made me a total of zero cents but has created millions in opportunities for me. Blogging is pull marketing. Providing great content, relevent information, intriguing stories, tips and ideas will bring people to you. To find your best next job, focus on the company not the job

To find your best next job, focus on the company not the job When you are trying to figure out your next career move, the company match is more important than job match. This is because the people who are happiest at work are doing what they do best, every day. You can be a janitor and use your strengths, and you can be an associate at one of the very best law firms and not use your strengths. This is not about your IQ, its about your core personality, and matching the needs of your core personality to a companys needs. Dont use past skills to get a future job says, positive psychologist Senia Maymin. Use your strengths. A job should be more about what excites you and less about what youve done This is good advice, but it requires having a solid understanding of yourself and of what companies have to offer. A book Ive been waiting all year for is Recruit or Die by Chris Resto, Ian Ybarra and Ramit Sethi. This book tells companies how to recruit young talent. (The first thing I like about this book is that now we can stop arguing about if employees hold the stronger hand in the recruiting process. They do. And every time people tell me that Im nuts for saying that employees are forcing corporate America to change, I can just point to this book.) Recruit or Die explains that the companies who get the best employees year after year do so by selling themselves more than selling the job, and the recruiting process is a time to show the candidate who the company is. When there are tons of candidates for every job, only top-tier firms do this. In a market like today, where workers are in high demand, any company that will survive has to do it. As a candidate, this book is a peek into the secret world of your suitors. You should understand the range of ways that forward-thinking companies recruit so you know how to judge the company youre talking to. This will help you to match your strengths properly with a companys. One of the most important things to notice in the recruiting process is that the best companies dont use money as a recruiting tool. Its not that they think you dont care about money. But they know they cannot differentiate themselves with money. Because you probably have a lot of friends who make the same amount of money you do; your pay range is not going to make you feel significantly different about your life because the happiness that money brings you is always relative to the people around you. Recruit or Die is also gives us a good way to understand career possibilities. For example, the book recommends that companies do things like send you a congratulatory card or gift basket when you finally take the job. This is small, yes, but it sets the tone for gratitude going forward and a culture of gratitude can almost single-handedly make a great work experience. So how do you get to know your strengths? Here are two tests to take either one will tell you your strengths and each takes about 30 minutes: Signature Strengths Questionnaire and Gallup StrengthsFinder . And how do you figure out what company is a good match for you? You know how you go on dating sites and before you answer any ads, you read a bunch to see what the possibilities are? Use Recruit or Die like Match.com and get educated on what the market has to offer before you offer yourself.

For 2020, Write a Career Plan

For 2020, Write a Career Plan What’s your plan? If 2019 was not all you’d hoped for at work, you might be thinking of moving on this year. Here’s an alternative idea: create a plan to grow and thrive where you are right now. Large companies often create career plans for rising stars. The plans help leadership prepare for the future by identifying needs and gaps in the workforce and looking at existing talent to fill them. If your company doesn’t have a clear plan for your progression, there’s no reason you can’t work on one for yourself. You can start by asking for your manager’s input, but you might do even   better by drafting something yourself so she has a starting point. It will be much easier to edit one than for her to create one. The benefits of a career plan are obvious. You’ll have goals in place to keep you motivated. You’ll also stay focused on what’s most important for your current role     and for your future role. You and your manager will have ways to measure your progress and performance, and she’ll be less worried about the possibility that you’ll be moving on to greener pastures. York University (based in the United Kingdom) offers these suggestions for writing your own career plan: Understand your team structure It’s important to know how your team is set up, and where the team’s responsibilities lie within the company as a whole. Get your head fully around how your team is integral to the business, and plan goals accordingly. Consult with your manager Unless you’re running a company, there’s always likely to be someone in a more senior position than yourself. Make sure that you sit down and discuss your future aims with them. They’ll have invaluable advice for you, and they’ll be interested in tracking your progress. Understand what you can’t control Understand what you can’t control. As useful as a plan can be, it’s impossible to cover every potential outcome or eventuality. A good way to partially counter this is by plotting out ‘what if’ scenarios. An obvious example here is your team either not hitting their own goals or failing to perform. Safeguard yourself and the company by preparing for this possible eventuality. Look to the future While short-term goals are handy, it would be wise to set up a few targets based around long-term progression as well. Picture where you see yourself in five years; which track suits you best? Managing teams or systems? Sales? Service? Finance? Marketing? Where you’ve started isn’t necessarily where you have to end up. When you can visualize your future role, you can start building in-the-moment goals around these future ambitions. Don’t just set work-related goals While everything should ultimately tie back in to making you as good as possible at your job, don’t be afraid to set goals which aren’t directly work-related. Personal development shouldn’t be overlooked. You can work on education (both formal and informal), health goals, financial planning, and building your network. After you’ve created a plan, it’s important to create a system for accountability and support if you need it. York University suggest these step: Schedule reviews You can meet with your manager as frequently as you see fit. It’s important to keep on top of your goals by making sure you’re on the right path. During this process, you’ll also get more clear on what your manager’s priorities are and why they’re important. Get help if required If you’re really struggling to come up with or reach relevant targets, you can always ask for help. This doesn’t just mean from your manager alone. If you’re part of a team, or a manager yourself, your coworkers or staff might be able to provide advice on the kinds of targets you can set or how you can improve your performance right now. Assess your workload Does your work actually tie in to the goals you’ve set for yourself? It could be that you’ve slowly drifted away from the role you were in when you set your targets. Make sure you compare your workload and what you’re achieving to your goals. Are you stretching your skill set? Asking for new responsibilities is a good way to increase your value to the company and prove you’re ready for the next step. Track accomplishments Keep a detailed record of everything you’ve achieved. A journal can help you assess how well you’re progressing with your overall plan, and will come in handy when you’re due for your annual evaluations. The accomplishment journal is also a great resource for updating your resume and preparing for interviews as well. It can be hard to recall specifics like dates, budgets and team members years after a project has ended. For access to the full career planning guide and other useful resources, visit the University of York’s site.
