How to Update Your Interview Process with These 5 Tips
How to Update Your Interview Process with These 5 TipsIf you want to appeal to the modern job seeker, you need to retire outdated hiring practices. The text-heavy job ads, impersonal phone interviews, and routine interview questions of yesterday arent going to do a great job at attracting and securing todays top talent. And, considering nearly half (46 percent) of the 3,894 talent acquisition decision makers surveyed in LinkedIns Global Recruiting Trends 2016 report are having trouble finding candidates in high demand talent pools, it may be time to step up your interviewing game. When it comes to scoring top talent with updated interview processes, these hiring professionals have the right idea1. Have an actual conversation.Behavioral interviews are (finally) dying out. Asking canned questions will not help you connect with the top talent that you want. Forward-thinking companies are empowering recruiters and hiring managers to show their personalities and actually have conversations with their candidates. It might sound old school, but nothing beats sitting down with a candidate over a cup of coffee and doing a deep dive about their experience. Does this take a lot of time? Yes, having a conversation with a candidate is an investment but isnt it one you should be making with someone potentially joining your company? Worst case scenario is that the candidate will not receive an offer but will leave at least feeling heard. Glen Loveland, HR Manager, CCTV NewsIts time to say goodbye to behavioral interviews. Glenderful interviewtipsClick To Tweet2. Get the whole team involved.Team interviews are often used by different companies so that candidates can meet with the entire team (or a few key members) in a group setting or actual work environment.Team interviews ensure that there is synergy amongst the team and the candidate for collaboration if hired. Team members often feel threatened by new hires so if you give them the opportunity to weigh in and help make the decision, it can only benefit the business overall. Connect with candidates via video. Its become an increasingly common trend to use video conference as an interviewing tool to help capture candidates faster and to help with candidate convenience when it comes to getting away from work to interview. This approach has also assisted with employer costs by eliminating the need to fly in candidates multiple times for face-to-face interviews. Many candidates fall off in the interview process due to being too busy with the work at hand and an inefficient interview process where they have to leave work on multiple occasions in order to interview. Creating a video conference vorkaufsrecht really helps capture high-performing candidates and keeps them engaged in the interview process by limiting the amount of time they have to leave work.Kathleen S teffey, Founder and CEO, Naviga Recruiting Executive SearchCreating a video interview option captures high-performing candidates. SalesJournalClick To Tweet4. Focus on culture fit vs. technical skills. The best test of a good hire is what happens once theyre in the door. High volume hiring isnt a success if its followed by high attrition. Hiring for soft skills and culture fit increases the likelihood that new hires will succeed and thrive. Not every company is right for every person, socarefully vetting fit up front can significantly reduce early (less than one year) attrition. Companies are increasingly relying on recruiters, HR, tenured employees, and board members as objective interviewers assigned to talk to candidates about leadership, coaching, inspiring teams, and handling difficult employee situations. This new focus gives recruiters an opportunity to go beyond a focus on numbers and candidate experience, and contribute strategically to quality hiring and retention. Throw in a few oddball questions. Some employers have taken a liking to the practice of asking odd, quirky, or otherwise unpredictable questions. By doing this, interviewers are able to gauge how well a candidate can think on the fly and see if they are easily flustered. At the same time, an interviewer can gain an even mora clear picture of what a person is really like, while simultaneously endearing themselves a bit to the candidate. Most successful entrepreneurs are older than you think
Most successful entrepreneurs are older than you thinkMost successful entrepreneurs are older than you thinkThe romanticized image of entrepreneurs is a picture of youth a 20-something individual with disruptive ideas, boundless energy and a still-sharp mind. Silicon Valley has bet on this image for years. But is this right?Far from it, according to ur recent research with Javier Miranda of the U.S. Census Bureau and Pierre Azoulay of MIT.Our kollektiv analyzed the age of all business founders in the U.S. in recent years. We found that the average age of the most successful entrepreneurs is 45 and that founders in their 20s are the least likely to build a top firm. The myth of the young entrepreneurThe idea that the most successful new business ventures come from the young, even the very young, is widespread.Younger people are often thought to be less beholden to current thinking and thus mora naturally innovative and disruptive. Many observers (perhaps enviously) believe the young ha ve mora time and energy, with fewer family responsibilities like nightly dinner with the kids or financial demands like mortgages. Besides, as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said, Young people are just smarter.Young founders also make for a dramatic story. The college dropout or young corporate drone shakes off conventional expectations to launch a new business with a ragtag team of fellow 20-somethings. After countless late nights, they emerge with the new killer app or consumer product that takes the market by storm, landing them on the cover of Inc., creating enormous personal wealth, and reminding stuffy executive types that hungry young upstarts can and will eat their lunch. This stereotype has meaningful consequences. In Silicon Valley, for example, venture capitalists show a clear bias toward investing in younger founders, often leaving older founders out in the cold. The perceived link between youth and success is so prevalent that some tech workers reportedly seek plastic surgery to appear younger.Primetime for entrepreneurship is middle ageBut the image of the young entrepreneur didnt hold when we looked at the data.Past studies of high-growth entrepreneurship and age have yielded conflicting results, based in part on small and selected data sets that researchers studied. To examine the question more definitively, we conducted an internal project at the U.S. Census Bureau. That enabled us to examine all businesses launched in the U.S. between 2007 and 2014, encompassing 2.7 million founders. We compared founder age to firm performance measures, including employment and sales growth, as well as the exit by acquisition or IPO.Successful entrepreneurs are much more likely to be middle-aged, not young. For the top 0.1% of fastest growing new businesses in the U.S., the average age of the founder in the business first year was 45.Similarly, middle-aged founders dominate successful exits. By our estimation, a 50-year-old founder is 1.8 times more likely th an a 30-year-old founder to create one of the highest growth firms. Founders in their early 20s have the lowest likelihood of building a top-growth firm. Why would entrepreneurs get better with age? Its not clear, but we have a few theories. More seasoned entrepreneurs may draw on greater experience in management or deeper industry-specific knowledge. They may also have greater financial resources and more relevant social networks to leverage the founders business idea. For example, our study showed that prior work experience in the startups specific industry more than doubled the chance of an upper-tail growth success.Even some of the most famous young founders tend to peak toward middle age. For example, Steve Jobs and Apple found their blockbuster innovation with the iPhone, released when Jobs was 52.Change the narrativeBy continuing to associate entrepreneurship with youth, investors are likely betting too young. If venture capitalists and other early-stage investors take our fin dings to heart, theyll consider founders from a broader age range and may thereby back higher-growth firms.By the same token, middle-aged would-be entrepreneurs may feel more confident about their chances and more likely to win the resources they need to bring business visions to life.On an even broader scale, the emphasis on young entrepreneurs has likely skewed innovation and its funding toward problems that the younger segment understands best. Updating views of the entrepreneurs life cycle and peak performance within it may shift innovation toward areas that older individuals know better. The myth of the young entrepreneur is an age-old image, but perhaps one whose number is finally up.Benjamin F. The surprising effect insufficient sleep has on perceptionThe surprising effect insufficient sleep has on perceptionJust when you thought you knew all there welches to know about the negative effects of sleep deprivation, a new doctoral thesis from the Karolinska Institutet posits a new incentive to get yur circadian clock in order. The implications of the data arent entirely novel, but they thickenresearch that has been somewhat limited in the past.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe aim of the thesis was to better identify how insufficientsleep arrests various emotional mechanisms. The hypothesis is composed of five studies investigating both young and old participants. The psychological impact of lack of sleepSandra Tamm and her colleagues used MRI and PET techniques to examine three psychiatric factors in 117 participants emotional contagion, empathy, and emotional regulation. Emotional contagion refers to the tendency to imitate other peoples emotions, empathy, of course, is the reaction to the pain of others and emotional regulation in this instance refers to our ability to control our response to emotional images. The researchers found that a lack of sleep impaired most of these virtues considerably. Its what they called a negative bias. In addition to making us more irritable, insufficient sleep impairs our perception of others. It makes us more likely to perceive things negatively. In conclusion, this thesis shows that restricted sleep is associated with a negativity bias and a decreased ability to regulate emotions, at least in young. Increased global signal variability in the brains gray matter could be one possible correlate to the behavioral effects of sleep restriction, the paper reports. It should be noted, however, that the experts observed no negative impact on empathy, even when all the other emotional capacities were hampered.Independent stud ies have already evidenced damage to cognition and memory retention due to lack of sleep (this current study also documented the negative impact on concentration and fatigue in participants), but research is beginning to suggest that a lack of sleep might be an antecedent to various mental disorders as well.Tamm explains, Ultimately, the results can help us understand how chronic sleep problems, sleepiness, and tiredness contribute to psychiatric conditions, such as by increasing the risk of depression,Tamm and her team punctuated their new thesis by saying more research needs to be done to determine other mechanisms underlying emotional dysfunction related to poor sleep, namely by conducting studies on larger samples. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can m ake in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Proclaim Email Debt Forgiveness (or Email Bankruptcy, If Things Have Gotten Drastic)
How to Proclaim Email Debt Forgiveness (or Email Bankruptcy, If Things Have Gotten Drastic) How to Proclaim Email Debt Forgiveness (or Email Bankruptcy, If Things Have Gotten Drastic) In todays workplace, email is a fact of life. Gone are the days of predictable phone calls and regular in-person chats to check in. The bulk of communication now happens through email. Often, one message may contain 10 more or recipients â" all of whom seem to reply all to share the smallest of details. This can leave your inbox jam-packed with unread and unanswered messages. Email Debt Forgiveness Day At some point, this backlog of emails can become downright embarrassing. The good news is, theres hope! In 2015, the Reply All podcast declared April 30 to be Email Debt Forgiveness Day. (Ed. Note â" Were a little late this year, but Angelas got some good points, doesnt she?) Email Debt Forgiveness Day is a time when you can respond to all the emails youve been too nervous to respond to, regardless of how much time has passed. Emails that qualify include ones that produce anxiety at both the thought of responding and the thought of the length of time thats passed since you received it. You can now put that worry out of your mind and respond without the fear of a negative reaction. Simply explain the situation when you fire off that email. (And you may want to include a link to an online article about this special day, just in case your recipient hasnt heard about it.) Declaring Email Bankruptcy If your inbox has grown to the point of no return, however, then Email Debt Forgiveness Day may not be enough to fix your problem. In this case, you might want to consider email bankruptcy. You can declare email bankruptcy by deleting all the emails in your inbox that are older than a certain date. Once the emails are deleted, you send a message to everyone who has emailed you. Explain the situation, and that youre officially declaring email bankruptcy. Let them know that if they still need a response to their message, they should resend their original email. Making the Most of Your Clean Slate Both of these tactics can help you start over with a clean slate. Once you have that slate, there are a few guidelines you need to follow if you want to keep your inbox manageable going forward. First, cut back on email altogether by not hitting the reply all button. This is such an enticing little button. It keeps everyone on the email string informed, and it gives you credit for your contribution. But in reality, reply all is very rarely helpful. Usually, it just creates many more unnecessary and unread messages. Next, schedule a set time of each day that you will devote to email and put a 24-hour response time policy into place. This sound hard, I know. And often, you dont have all the information you need to respond to an email within one day! If that happens, you can still stick to your policy by letting the send know that you received their message and are working to find an answer. See? That wasnt as hard as you may have thought. Last, its a good idea to learn to use the features and tools your email program offers to help keep things in order. Flags, categories, tabs, and automated out-of-office replies can all be invaluable in keeping you organized and ahead of the email game. â" To be competitive in todays workforce, you must not only be great at your job, but also great at managing your online communications. Dont let email get the best of you â" and if it already has, then its time to forgive those debts or declare bankruptcy. A version of this article originally appeared on The Memphis Daily News. Here are the best office plants for a happier, more productive you
Here are the best office plants for a happier, more productive you Here are the best office plants for a happier, more productive you Thereâs no better way to add some life to your workspace than a plant. In fact, office greenery is more than a pretty desk accessory â" a desk with plants on it can even make you up to 15% more productive, one study found. Other studies have shown that contact with nature is literally good for you and reduces stress. With that in mind, you canât afford not to have a plant or two.Ladders talked to two plant experts - and Instagram stars - about the best type of plants to adorn your office space and soothe your mind. The Sillâs Christopher SatchChristopher Satch is head of plant science and education at The Sill, a plant store that also boasts 351,000 Instagram followers.âPlants are really great to have in offices,â Satch says. âThey can make an office seem cozier and more welcoming, they reduce stress, and they increase creativity and productivity.â Also, for those that stare at a computer screen most of the day, plants can reduce eye strain, providing an âeye-resti ng space where your eyes can focus off the screen,â Satch said. âGreen is actually one of the easiest colors that the human eye sees.âPlants also clean the air. Office air has its own indoor air pollution, and plants âtake all these nasties in the air like plastics, chemicals, rubbers, paints, and computer parts â" anything synthetic breaks down over time and releases volatile organic compounds that we breathe in, some of which are carcinogenic.âLet there be light â" or notMost plants need light to thrive, and there are generally two areas of an office, light-wise: the areas right next to a window that are full of direct natural light, and the areas that only get artificial light.Satch recommends different types of plants of different types of light. For direct sunlight Cacti, succulents Snake plants Cattleya orchids Citrus tree or other food-producing plants, like a spicy pepper plant. For artificial light/low light Marimo mossball â" an aquatic algae sphere, this is âsuper-cute and super-fuzzy, and has the ability to live off artificial light. Itâs great for desks.â Pothos ZZ plant Summer Rayne Oakes of Homestead BrooklynSummer Rayne Oakes is the founder of Homestead Brooklyn, a gardening and food site which has 65,100 Instagram followers, founded the Houseplant Masterclass, and is the author of the forthcoming book, How to Make a Plant Love You: Cultivating Your Personal Green Space. She keeps 700 houseplants in her Brooklyn apartment.Consider what you donât know about the office environment when planning for your plant, Oakes says.âOne thing to consider is holidays and days you are not around the work environment - and if the office actually shuts off heat at night (totally happens in start-ups) or is near a drafty door, heater or air conditioning unit,â says Oakes. âThis will truly limit plants in the office space, as most of our subtropical and tropical houseplant species donât like the extreme temperature changes.âFor direct sunlight Dracaenas For artificial light/low lightâIf you want a desk plant that will be sustained in lower light, I would recommend getting a little overhead lamp for it,â she says for her low-light suggestions. Watching the Crops Grow
Watching the Crops Grow Watching the Crops Grow Watching the Crops Grow Addie Thompson is breeding better varieties of sorghumbut shes going about it the hard way. This spring, Thompson, a postdoctoral researcher at Purdue University, helped plant a 10-acre field of different genetic lines of sorghum in 144 large plots. Then she geared up to harvest data. When the weather was still cool and plants were not yet knee high, a colleague marked three plants in each plot with small plastic tags. Then, at least once a week, Thompson and a dozen other researchers planned to spend an afternoon in the field revisiting each tagged plant. Theyll measure stem diameter with a caliper, height with a piece of PVC pipe marked off in inches. Theyll count the leaves, mark the level of the highest leaf with a Sharpie, and use a handheld fluorometer to gauge the plants greenness. Each month, as the Indiana sun beats down and the plants grow taller, they will take detailed measurements, weighing stalks, leaves and seed heads, which contain grain. Theyll drive mulchers with threatening five-foot spinning blades to harvest samples of each crop line. Back in the lab, the researchers will dry and weigh the samples for yield and perform one biochemical analyses after another to learn more about them. Its a lot of work to convince people to do the work. Its not fun to do. Its hot, sweaty, buggy, and not very safe, Thompson said. If the research succeeds, Thompson and her colleagues will help breed new sorghum varieties that could grow tall and thrive despite poor soil, heat, and drought. These new varieties could produce more biofuel per acre than any sorghum ever grown, while slashing climate-disrupting carbon dioxide emissions compared with gasoline and todays most popular biofuel, corn-derived ethanol. And the technology the team develops could spark a revolution in crop breeding. But before any of that happens, Addie Thompson is breeding sorghum the hard way. That's because, for now at least, it's the only way. Addie Thompson examines sorghum plants that are being grown in a greenhouse to produce seed. Image: Purdue University A Need for Speed Less than a century ago, the average farmer produced enough food to feed between 10 and 12 people. Then came the Green Revolution. Through the middle of the 20th century, crop breeders developed new lines of staple grains, agronomists mechanized soil management and crop production methods, and scientists developed better fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides. Now the average farmer feeds 120 people. But providing food and clean fuels to Earths nine billion people in 2050 will require farmers to double crop production per acre, said Joe Cornelius, a plant physiologist who directs the Transportation Energy Resources from Renewable Agriculture (TERRA) program at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). And theyll need to do it while using much less water and protecting whats left for people to drink. Before landing at ARPAE, Cornelius worked for a quarter century at the agricultural biotech giant Monsanto, where he led efforts to breed new lines of crops to make more nutritious foods, vegetable oils, biodegradable motor oil, and biofuels. There he witnessed researchers use traditional crop breeding strategies and modern genetic engineering tools to develop better crop varieties. Yet time after time, they ran into dead ends. Part of the problem was that crop plants take months to grow, so breeders can grow only a few generations each year. That limits how often they can pick winning varieties from each generation and discard the losers. Whats more, even though a plant varietys genetic characteristics are relatively easy to determine, scientists cannot predict how it will do in the field until they test it. This makes breeding crops as slow as watching plants grow. As climate changes and global food and energy demand grows, well need to find or create crops that yield more, even in the face of drought, heat and other weather extremesand to do so well need to breed them more quickly than ever before, Cornelius said. The nation needs new bioenergy crops in particular to meet congressional mandates designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By 2022, refiners must mix 21 billion gallons of renewable biofuels into gasoline and diesel. These fuels can be made from cellulose extracted and converted from plant material, including corn stubble, corncobs, wood chips, strawand sorghum. This ancient cereal crop grows like a weed. Even in poor soil with very little fertilizer, it reaches 20 feet tall. Originally from the Horn of Africa, it withstands hot, dry conditions that would wilt even a tough corn plant. Indeed, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has projected that it could replace fading crops like tobacco, cotton, peanut, rice, and citrus in a belt of land from eastern Texas to the southern Atlantic Coastbut only if crop breeders can develop better sorghum lines that are customized for biofuel production. When Cornelius joined ARPA-E, he saw an opportunity to advance bioenergy sorghum, and also advance crop breeding more broadly. By finding a faster way to grow and select sorghum varieties, he realized he could lay the groundwork for technologies that would usher in the next generation of super-plants. The research would be risky, bringing together new technologies and costing more than the private sector would pay. To make that happen, in June 2015 ARPA-E launched TERRA. Their goal was to speed the breeding of bioenergy sorghum varieties, and they allocated more than $3 million to each of six interdisciplinary research groups, including the Purdue team. ;custompagebreak; LemnaTecâs field analyzer moves its module like a line scanner to assess crops growing beneath it. Image: LemnaTec Breeder Bots To get the most biofuel from the least land, farmers must maximize the yield of raw plant material per acre per year, while using a minimum of fertilizer and chemicals. To rapidly develop crops that do that, sorghum breeders and other scientists want to identify the traits, or phenotypes, that predict which plants will be biggest and have the most biomass to convert into fuel. Such phenotypes may include early season growth rates, the number of leaves on a plant, how well it uses soil nutrients, and many more. Right now no one knows exactly which of these many traits best predict biomass yield. To find out, TERRA-funded teams plan to monitor a diverse array of genes and traits in thousands of individual sorghum plants from the ground and the air. They're using robots, UAVs, sensing technologies, and big data to make that happen. None of these technologies are entirely new to the farm. For the past decade, farmers have been using UAVs to determine where they need to apply water and farm chemicals, thereby increasing productivity and profit while reducing farm pollution. Other farmers have begun using bots for labor-intensive tasks. In California, for example, self-propelled bots prune and monitor grape vines and smart, rolling lettuce bots thin out budding lettuce plants. Until now, few have tried to adapt these technologies for crop breeding. For millennia, crop breeders who wanted better varieties walked their fields and tracked their plants to note which plants grew taller, for example, or withstood insects or yielded more grain or vegetables. Thompson and her supervisor, plant geneticist Mitch Tuinstra, and their colleagues augment these traditional methods by using low-tech devices and some modern lab equipment to laboriously screen for phenotypes. To monitor crops from the ground, both the Purdue team and Clemson Universitys ARPA-E BOOST team are developing self-driving, instrument-equipped bots or vehicles that steer themselves through a breeding plot without trampling plants. At Purdue, Tuinstra, crop physiologist Chris Boomsma and engineering professors Ed Delp and Ayman Habib are modifying a commercial sprayer to give it onboard data storage and autonomous steering capabilities. By combining data generated from all these sensors, they plan to create a 3-D view of plants that reveals structure, including stem size, and the number, locations, dimensions, and angle of leaves. And by integrating these data, they hope to uncover clues about the plants future growth. The BOOST team, in contrast, is building a low-riding three-foot-long robot with a scaled-down version of the LIDAR laser scanner used in autonomous cars. The robot will roll by rows of crops, using cameras and a line scanner (a type of LIDAR) to create a 3-D, high-resolution model of the plants, said George Kantor of Carnegie Mellon University, the lead roboticist on the project. A manipulator arm on the rolling robot will be able to reach out and touch a plant, performing tasks for which a crop breeder like Thompson would use a handheld instrument. From my perspective as a robotics researcher, this is one of the most exciting parts, Kantor said. For example, the arm will attach a clothespin-like sensor to leaves to measure the plants chlorophyll levels, the gases it exchanges with air, and the leafs response to light. The Purdue team will also monitor crops from the air using a fixed-wing UAV. It will carry a laser scanner and standard RGB camerasordinary digital cameras that capture the same red, green, and blue light as the human eyeto provide an overhead view of the crop. It will also carry a hyperspectral camera, which detects hundreds of colors, including some the eye can't see, and a thermal camera, which detects infrared light. Together, these will determine crop canopy temperature, which indicates crop stress. The scientists will use high-end GPS and inertial measurement units (GPS/IMUs) to pinpoint the locations of the phenomobile and UAVs. This will enable them to integrate image and sensor data from the different vehicles. Between the UAVs and the ground-based platforms, its going to be extremely precisedown to the centimeter level, which is crazy, Boomsma enthused. The BOOST team also uses a rotary-wing UAV being developed at Near Earth Autonomy, a spinoff from Carnegie Mellon University. There, engineer Paul Bartlett and his team are mounting a 5.5-foot, 35-pound helicopter UAV with LIDAR and high-resolution RGB cameras to detect plant shape and structure, and hyperspectral cameras that sense red and infrared light. Again, the goal is to take a spectrometric fingerprint of plants that reveals greenness, nitrogen content, dying leaves, and other biological phenotypes. In 15 minutes, we can get a snapshot of the whole field, Bartlett said. Another ambitious TERRA-funded project comes from Lemnatec, a German company that has built the largest field-scanning robot in the world: a giant 30-ton steel gantry that sits near Maricopa, Arizona. Its instrument modulethe size of a Volkswagen busmoves down two 200-meter tracks and can scan the field one 1.5-meter band at a time. The module carries two metric tons of instruments, far more than a UAV or ground robot, and Lemnatec is loading it with sensors to see which ones generate the most useful data. We can image the plants from emergence to harvest and all the stages in between, with a variety of sensors throughout the season, said Todd Mockler, a plant biologist at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis whos working with Lemnatec on the project. This will be uncharted territory. ;custompagebreak; Processing aerial camera and sensor data can correct for topography (top) and measure plant height (heat map, middle). Image: Purdue University Farming Data Once the data from the various sensors is downloaded, researchers will process and analyze it. This task requires a combination of data analysis and machine learning. This is Big Data, said Melba Crawford, a Purdue professor of agronomy and civil and electrical and computer engineering whos coordinating the groups machine-learning efforts. First, the engineering team will develop new image-processing algorithms to sift through processed sensor data to discern a variety of phenotypes, such as height, leaf number, position and angle, chlorophyll, water content, and other indicators of plant health. Once scientists have information on various traits, theyll need to mine it for correlations that predict the biomass yield for a given sorghum variety, says Artur Dubrawski, a computer scientist and mechanical engineer at Carnegie Mellon University whos doing similar work on the BOOST project. Understanding these correlations will enable researchers to scrutinize plants the way medical devices monitor human patients in the intensive care unit. This forecasting ability should help us make those decisions in advance of crops completing their whole growth cycle, Dubrawski said. To make even better decisions, both the scientists are also tapping existing knowledge of sorghum genetics, using advanced statistics and machine learning to relate genetic variations, or genotypes, to the plants phenotypes. The computations are challenging because multiple genes can influence each trait, just as multiple genes influence human height or build. Whats more, a single gene can influence multiple traits. TERRA-funded scientists are also using advanced statistics and machine learning to build models that predict plant traits of interest. Ultimately, such computations would help identify key genes that help plants grow faster, tolerate drought, or thrive with less nutrients. This could lead to high-end computational tools that combine artificial intelligence, superhuman recall, and the latest advances in biology. Such a system could game potentially winning phenotypes before they're even planted, much the way computational fluid dynamics helps engineers choose designs. Its almost like IBM Watson for breeding, Mockler said. Like all ARPA-E programs, TERRA aims to spin off commercial technologies. These could range from powerful sensors and improved field robots, UAVs to better computational methods. Whats more, a lot of the engineering will translate into field-scanning technology that any crop breeder can ultimately use. Were bringing together genomics, engineering, breeding, and computational analytics, Cornelius said. We have this complete suite of technologies that are working together, and now we can pluck out the needle from the haystack. Dan Ferber is a senior editor at Mechanical Engineering magazine. For the past decade, farmers have been using UAVs to determine where they need to apply water and farm chemicals, thereby increasing productivity and profit while reducing farm pollution.

Things To Consider Before Making A Career Change
Things To Consider Before Making A Career Change Things To Consider Before Making A Career Change We all need change sometimes, even when it comes to our jobs. The daily routine gets boring or the work loses its interest, and we begin to wonder what else is out there. For some people simply switching jobs is enough to get them excited about their career again. But for others a more dramatic shift, such as getting a job in a new industry, is needed. However, aside from the usual risks associated with taking a new job, a career change has its own challenges that job seekers need to consider before jumping into unfamiliar waters. Switching careers requires more research and preparation than an ordinary job search. If youre considering a career change, here are four things to put on your to-do list before making the leap: Research the state of the new industry If youâre excited by the challenges a new field provides, itâs important to have a firm understanding of what working in that industry would be like. Find out what companies are leaders within the industry and the type of work they do. Search the career sections of their sites to see what types of positions they have to offer. Also, research overall hiring trends in the industry to determine if opportunities are growing or shrinking. For example, a 2015 survey by LinkedIn listed the fields that the most people joined or left last year. Topping the list of expanding industries was technology, healthcare and oil and energy while professional services, education, government and the nonprofit sectors saw the biggest declines. If you discover a large number of employees are running from the new career youâre considering, find out why. Signs that industry-wide layoffs or company closures are forcing employees to find new jobs might mean you should rethink joining that particular industry. Get back to basics Depending on how long youâve been a part of the labor force, the majority of the experiences and skills you have listed on your resume could be very industry-specific. But that doesnât mean you lack the qualities other types of employers are looking for. A 2015 report by Burning Glass took a look at job postings from over 40,000 different sources and determined which baseline skills are important to each career. While certain skills were specific to their industries, several were valuable across the job market. Communication skills, for example, were the No. 1 skill employers looked for in 13 of the 15 fields included in the survey. Make a list of basic characteristics and strengths you could bring to any job. Then look at current job postings in the new industry youâre exploring to verify that your qualities will help you succeed. Consider also taking a personality test like Myers-Briggs. This can help both you and employers identify your personal strengths and how they make you a better employee. Redefine your career path A career change means a new career path. The plans and goals you once set for yourself may no longer apply to your new job. Instead of waiting a few years to see if your new career will work out long-term, take the time to research what options are available in that field. Prove You#8217;re Raise Worthy in a Few Simple Steps
Prove You#8217;re Raise Worthy in a Few Simple Steps Prove You#8217;re Raise Worthy in a Few Simple Steps First, it is important to understand that simply having considerable experience at a job does not equate to added value for your employer. In reality, the more value you are to the company the more money they will pay you; experience does not generally merit higher financial benefits. And while this may dishearten some long-time employees whose professional mantra is to âjust put in your time and stay under the radar,â to hard working, committed, and outstanding employees this means you can actually earn a raise instead of passively waiting for a âtime-servedâ pay hike. But to do this you must first honestly discuss with yourself how much value you truly provide your employer. Your answer can help you realize where you can show initiative and accomplishment to show your manager that you are capable of more than you are currently doing. Second, after you understand your true value to a company, look for ways to increase that value. Take on additional projects, volunteer for additional responsibilities, and show your enthusiasm for your work at all times. In due time, this visible desire to go above and beyond will be noticed and rewarded. All you need to do to start is make a list of potential projects or other activities you can potentially take on at work. Jump in and participate wherever you can. In addition to keeping track of your accomplishments, go straight to your boss and directly ask if he or she has suggestions for additional tasks that you can do. Make sure your boss knows that you are looking to take on more responsibilities. If you receive suggestions then you know exactly where to start. But if you are put off, thatâs okay too. This simply means that you will have to prove to your boss that you really mean business. Donât let your boss dismiss you with a brief âIâll get back to you on that.â Follow up after about a week, but not before youâve constructed a list of tasks that you can perform to help improve your company. Not many employees take such initiative so you will immediately stand out among your peers and show your boss that you are serious about increasing your value. You should come away with at least one extra assignment that you can do. Finally, donât take your new responsibilities lying down- excel. Collect proof of your stellar work as evidence of your enhanced value. Feedback from clients or coworkers can be very valuable so be sure to record compliments in writing and save any successful material from past projects as a reference to your work. The more proof you have when you shoot for a raise the easier time you will have arguing for why you deserve it.

This is the secret strategy to insane productivity
This is the secret strategy to insane productivity This is the secret strategy to insane productivity Whenever we talk about the secret to productivity, we tend to hyper-focus on tactics.Thatâs not to say tactics arenât part of it - because they are. But itâs important not to lose sight of the strategy in the process.Whatâs the strategy?Move from beginning to end quickly and effectively.Thatâs the definition of being âproductive.âMost people arenât productive because of these reasons:They try to do too many things at one time. They fall victim to distraction. They overbook and under-allocate the hours in their day.But here are the real reasons people arenât productive. They get lost in the weeds and forget what theyâre truly aiming for. They spend far too much time ideating and not enough time working. They donât know what is dependent upon what: what needs to be finished first, second, third, fourth, etc.Understanding the true pitfalls of ânot getting things doneâ is the first step toward actually putting practices in place that will move you from where you are to where you want to be.So, whatâs the secret to insane productivity?Itâs understanding what you need to do - before you start to do it. Donât take this the wrong way: As BGO creative director Mark Beeching would say, âYou canât steer a stationary ship.âYou have to get started in order to really understand how to improve at all. What Iâm saying is, along that journey you can do yourself a tremendous service by preparing for your work sessions by clearly understanding what it is you need to do, and how youâre going to do it.We waste a lot of energy when we sit down and have to ask ourselves, âOK, where do I start?â Instead, you should spend the night before answering that question, so that by the time you sit down the next day to work, you already know: âI need to finish these two reports, I need to research this strategy, I need to create this document, and I need to send this e-mail.âThe more you can plan your trajectory ahead of time, the less time you will waste along the way figuring out where youâre flying to and how youâre going to land. You have removed that ambiguity. That allows you the f reedom to actually get things done. This article originally appeared on Inc Magazine.

Tracking Finance Jobs in a Bear Market
Tracking Finance Jobs in a Bear Market Tracking Finance Jobs in a Bear Market Editorâs note: This article was originally available to attendees of Laddersâ finance-industry career event held in New York on Feb. 9, 2009. One thousand applicants for one position. Ron Dadina couldnât believe what he was hearing. The job wasnât an open call for an entry-level position; it was a senior finance position at The World Bank in New York. But Dadina was hitting the market for a job in finance at a terrible time.He was laid off in June from Bear Stearns, where he was the managing director of the companyâs International Debt Capital Markets Group. By the end of summer, thousands of finance executives had joined him in the ranks of the unemployed and applying for jobs like the one at the World Bank. The World Bank called in Dadina and 12 others to interview for the open position. He didnât get the job. âFor any job these days,â Dadina told Ladders, âthere are not just a few dozen but hundreds of people applying.â Unemployment in the finance industry soare d 75 percent in 2008, rising to 540,000 or 5.6 percent in December 2008 (the most recent figures available), up from 315,000 or 3.2 percent in December 2007, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Since December 2007, finance lost 19,800 jobs in New York alone (mostly in securities, commodity contracts and investment banks), according to New York stateâs Department of Labor. So Dadina and many like him find themselves at the top of their field but out of work and vying for scarce jobs in what appears to be a shriveled employment market. But Dadina found work as a managing director and senior credit officer in microfinance, a new branch of the industry that he considers more resilient than the larger market.. (See his story.) And heâs not alone. Interviews with finance-industry workers, recruiters and hiring managers conducted by Ladders since September and a review of employment statistics from Ladders and external sources show a constricted spring of jobs but pools of hiring at companies in specific fields, functions and specialties.âThere is definitely hiring going on,â said Clark Christensen, chief financial officer of PS Energy Group Inc. in Atlanta. âThere is a lot of churn; people are landing [in new jobs] all the time. I donât think it will expand, but itâs going on.â The hiring âwish listâ Even in financial services, some specialties offer richer hunting than others, said Harold Laslo, a staffing specialist at Aldan Troy Group, a recruitment firm in New York that focuses on finance. Auditing, security, debt remediation and other crisis-focused jobs have been on the increase since summer, recruiters say. Jobs for IT-related roles in financial services are also proliferating, as is anything that involves generating revenue, Laslo said. âCompanies have made up their wish lists in this market.âWhile the mortgage industry felt post-apocalyptic last year, recruiters expect anyone with experience structuring mortgages and mortgage-backed investments to be a hot commodity as firms attempt to untangle the mess of the housing collapse. Any skill set related to the puzzle of how to revalue complex assets based on consolidation of sub-prime mortgages and other risky but popular investment vehicles is a valuable line on your resume, recruiters told Ladders.âObviously a lot of people are having difficulty with mortgages, so banks need to analyze a customerâs economic situation and figure out what modifications have to be made to keep those loans as viable as possible,â said Mark Viego, vice president of the Management Resources division of Menlo Park, Calif.-based recruiting giant Robert Half International. âItâs there and in health care that weâre seeing the employment picture get better.âSpecifically, RHI has seen increased demand for loan processors, loan underwriters, customer service representatives, credit and collections specialists, and mortgage-operations specialists. âPretty much anyone connected with loan modifications or loan refinancing, weâre seeing increased demand for from financial institutions,â Viego said. The bottom line What businesses need more than anything else right now is to make money, said Laslo of Aldan Troy.âSales roles, IT roles - anyone who can be a revenue producer, particularly if they have a book of business to bring from a company that went out of business - anyone who can create revenue and be up and running when they land is a good candidate.ââCompanies are very bottom-line focused right now,â Viego said. âSo the advice I would give is to highlight (on your resume or elsewhere) everything youâve done that had any kind of bottom-line impact, whether that means increasing revenue or cutting costs.âThat includes technology leaders who save money in unexpected places and auditors who can go through a large companyâs purchase orders and identify purchases in which the buyer didnât get full advantage from bulk discounts, tiered pricing or other potential cost cutters, Viego said. And âanyone with tax expertise who can find rebates, or any kind of tax advantage a comp any can take, are also in demand,â he said.Layoffs at financial-services companies were so drastic that many may need to hire some of those executives back. Some may hire consultants or staff who specialize in debt-remediation and business turnarounds, as is often the case near the bottom of an economic downturn, according to Sherry Brickman, a partner at recruiting firm Martin Partners in Chicago.âWhatâs wrong with this picture?â The market is the worst itâs ever been for senior-level financial-services executives, and many donât want to add to the misery. Several FinanceLadder members reached by Ladders declined to be interviewed on the record, largely to avoid adding more negative news to a market they see as being held back by fear and negativity. âI just donât see any value in adding to it,â said a corporate attorney with a specialty in mergers and acquisitions, who was laid off after his firm lost several large customers to bankruptcy and cutbacks.Recruiters agree, and many claim the perception of misery, aside from spreading bad news, has artificially repressed the employment market in finance.âThe problem is that even companies that are doing well are so inundated with negative news about layoffs and the economic situation that itâs causing them to pause. âIf nobody else is hiring, whatâs wrong with this picture that we have this need?â â Laslo said. âSo they hesitate even when thereâs no good reason to.âOther companies, aware that hiring has become a buyerâs market, are being so unrealistically picky about both the job descriptions they post and the candidates they interview that even routing hires takes far longer than they should, he said. âAnd it puts more pressure on people internally at a firm that has a genuine need [for new hires],â he said. âThey have all the work distributed onto them while the company takes an extraordinary amount of time looking for the perfect candidate; and the perfect candidate doesnât exist.âAnd the slow pace feeds the cycle of perception, he said, as the lag reduces the number of people hired and contributes to the impression that there is no hiring to be had.âThe biggest problem is that people are nervous,â said Christensen of PS Energy in Atlanta. âAll the bricks that can drop in the ocean, the really bad news, have already dropped, so itâs just a question of how big the ripples are. âPeople are nervous. As soon as something happens to make them a little more comfortable about the economy, that will lead us out of this.âHitting bottom The Ayers Group/Career Partners International is a recruiting company that specializes in career transitions and outplacement. Based on its outplacement bookings, Sally Haver, Ayers Group senior vice president of business development, in December predicted there would continue to be major waves of layoffs into January and February of this year. Beyond that, she predicted, retraction might continue, but at a much slower pace, paving the way for an economically flat spring or summer and recovery later in the year.If we have hit bottom, that doesnât mean there wonât be more bad news, but layoffs at financial-services companies were so drastic in 2008 that many firms now need to fill some of those elminated positions, said Sherry Brickman, a partner at recruiting firm Martin Partners in Chicago. As commonly happens at the end of a downturn, many may hire consultants or staff who specialize in debt-remediation and business turnarounds, she said.It wonât take much to turn around the economy, especially the financial services market, Laslo said. A little good news might do it, or a little warm weather, or maybe successful government action.âI think we have hit bottom,â Laslo said. âAm I an economist or have any hardcore evidence to back that up? No. Have I seen a slight uptick in new business in the new year? Yes.â(Karl Rozemeyer contributed to this article.)

Give Them What They Want
Give Them What They Want Give Them What They Want Give Them What They Want Most people understand that the government is inflexible about processing forms. For example, if you are submitting your taxes, you must use the required forms, and your only options are the 1040, 1040-EZ, and1040A. You must complete the form very carefully, accurately, and completely. You must submit all of the required additional documents and forms. How about getting or renewing your driverâs license? Every piece information that is required must be submitted and in the way they want it to be submitted. You do not get to deviate, and if you do, you will not receive your all-important piece of identification. So, why is it then, when it comes to federal resumes, many people think they can submit creative works of writing? Is your individually designed and uniquely styled resume really going to show the reviewers that you are ready to enter the governmentâs world of rules and regulations? Your federal resume is a government form. Just like for your taxes or drivers license, the form must be filled carefully, accurately, and completely, or your submission will be automatically and categorically rejected. There is no guesswork involved. USAJOBS make it quite simple and provides an online form for you by way of the resume builder. Yet many applicants make the mistake of taking the shortcut of uploading and submitting their private industry resume. The problem is that this resume nearly always fails to contain all of the required information. Many applicants also insist on being creative and reinventing the wheel when writing their work experience block. Please do not make this mistake, because it will cost you the job. The accepted and most effective format for writing your work experience block is the OUTLINE FORMAT [view sample]. This format has been recognized by federal human resources as the best way to show that you have the qualifications they are looking for. More about this format is coming soon in a future post. So the common sense tip for the week is: give them what they want, or they wonât give you the job. ________________________________________ Response from S.
